Calm Companions & Fear Free

What is Fear Free?

Fear Free is an initiative founded by Dr. Marty Becker, known as “America’s Veterinarian.” It has been developed with the expertise of hundreds of professionals in the fields of behavior, medicine, and animal handling. Fear Free has emerged as one of the most transformative movements in the history of companion animal practice.

At The Animal Hospital of Sussex County, we prioritize your pet's physical and emotional well-being by understanding their unique needs. We offer “Fear Free” appointments for both cats and dogs, ensuring a calm and supportive environment. These appointments can begin with a video call, followed by an evaluation in our parking lot, and finally in our dedicated “Fear Free” room, which is designed to minimize stress and features a separate entrance. Exams can also be done outside if that makes your pet less stressed. Camille Re, our Certified Fear Free professional, is here to assist you and your pets every step of the way.

What a Fear Free appointment looks like inside the hospital:

1. Certified Fear Free professional in the room

2. Private entrance away from other pets and barking

3. Calming music playing

4. Diffuser in the room to assist with the animal’s anxiety

5. No intimidating animal photos on the wall that could potentially scare your pet

6. A calm veterinarian and technician who understands your pet’s needs along with a Certified Fear Free professional.

The mission is to understand and improve the ability to create a positive, happy, and Fear Free experience. To prevent and alleviate fear, anxiety, and stress in pets and their owners.

Fear Free is used on Cats and Dogs at the Animal Hospital of Sussex County.
